Gastric Varices Secondary to Splenic Vein Occlusion due to Pancreatic Diseases

چکیده
occlusion because of the splenic vein, s anatomy. Sutton et al. reported that 35% of their cases of isolated splenic vein occlusion were caused by tumors and only 17% by pancreatitis [9]. On the other hand, Sakorafas et al. found that pancreatitis was the etiology in 87 (60%) of 144 cases, while pancreatic malignancy was detected in only [13] (9%) of the patients [7], and recent reviews have clarified acute or chronic pancreatitis to be the probable cause of splenic vein thrombosis in the majority of cases [18]. There is a possible pathogenetic mechanism implying the increased intra-abdominal pressure leading to compression of the splenic vein in the case of pancreatic pseudocyst [19,20].

Endoscopic Color Doppler Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Gastric Varices Secondary to Left-Sided Portal Hypertension.
Gastric varices that arise secondary to the splenic vein occlusion can result in gastrointestinal hemorrhaging. Endoscopic color Doppler ultrasonography (ECDUS) was performed in 16 patients with gastric varices secondary to splenic vein occlusion. This study retrospectively evaluated the role of ECDUS in the diagnosis of gastric varices secondary to splenic vein occlusion. Thirteen patients had...

Background: Chronic pancreatitis and perivasculitis is the most common etiology of splenic vein thrombosis (SVT). Reported in up to 45% of patients with chronic pancreatitis, SVT may also be seen in patients with acute pancreatitis and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. It causes a localized portal hypertension called sinistral portal hypertension. Unlike those with generalized portal hypertension, pat...
متن کاملBleeding from isolated gastric varices as complication of a mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas
INTRODUCTION Bleeding from isolated gastric varices, though uncommon, may be life threatening and may occur as a consequence of splenic vein thrombosis by tumoral compression and subsequent left-sided portal hypertension. CASE OVERVIEW We report the case of a 37-year old woman, previously diagnosed with a benign pancreatic cyst, who presented with severe gastric variceal bleeding. DIAGNOSIS...

Sinistral portal hypertension (SPH) is a rare clinical syndrome that leads to gastric varices formation due to splenic vein thrombosis (SVT) in absence of liver function abnormalities or liver cirrhosis. The most common aetiology of SPH is pancreatic disease including cancer, pancreatitis, abscess formation, or a pseudocyst,3–6 followed by metastatic carcinoma, retroperitoneal fibrosis, Thrombo...
